LIFESTYLE CHANGE, REMEMBER THAT?

I'm annoyed.

Why am I annoyed? Because I'm tired of reading about people in the same boat as me fail.

How many people lose lots of weight, then gain it all or a lot of it back?

How many people stop setting goals for themselves?

How many people stop keeping a constant monitor on their weight to keep it in acceptable range?

Lots.

Maybe most.

WHY?

What is one of the main things we always talk about when we go down this road of getting healthy?

THIS IS A LIFESTYLE CHANGE!!!

Do you know what that means? That means there is no maintain. There is no "life gets in the way". There is no crash diet. There is no make time to work out/eat better etc.

Healthy is your life now. Committed isn't even the word. When you set out to get in shape, lose weight, get healthy, you committed to be a different/better/more aware person. Healthy lifestyle is not a hobby, it's not a fleeting idea that fades. It's not an idea for a neat blog. It's what you are now.It is you.

Stop making excuses, stop blaming things on life, stop getting angry at yourself, stop trying to fit health into your busy lifestyle. Just stop.

Healthy IS YOUR LIFESTYLE. Life fits into healthy, not the other way around. This is what you are now. You own your own actions , they do not own you.

I know this comes across like a preaching email, but I'll make no apology. Make a decision as to what you are and stick with it, otherwise you're not being true to yourself.

I've used the word too, but I'm done; there is no more "maintain", there is just you. Take responsibility for your actions and use them to be the person you want to be. Do it now or die regretting it!

Feeling bad about yourself is a absolute waist of time. Erase that shit from life and just do what the hell you need to do. Everybody fails. That's normal, but when it becomes an every day pattern, you need to do something. You already know what you need to do. Do it! NOW!

Or ignore me and go back to feeling bad about yourself, but I'm done reading about it.

I have no time for people who give up, and I'm not sorry about that.

I'm done.

You're absolutely right. I've been realizing lately that what I thought were legitimate reasons for not doing what is necessary were just excuses because I didn't feel like doing the work. I guess the big enemy is simple laziness and lack of self awareness. Once one stops being aware of who they are and what they're doing, they're bound to start taking the path of least resistance.

I don't know if I agree.

One thing I've always stood by is that you can't use "always" or "everyone" to fit a situation.

Maybe the 'healthy lifestyle' is easy for you. Maybe it was something that was overcome, and you have gone on to move forward.

But what about someone where it doesn't come easy? Forget excuses - that's a whole different story. But, for someone to say "everyone should be able to lose weight and keep it off" - it's equivalent to "everyone should be able to quit smoking" or "everyone should be able to get straight A's if they work hard enough".

I'm proud of what you've done - and I think it's great that it's become a lifestyle for you. But, until you walk in my shoes and try to overcome what I have had to overcome in the past year, I don't know if you can be completely accurate in my performance.

Your blog is your opinion, but I think it's incredibly short sighted in this case. Your situation isn't everyone's situation. Trust me when I say I wish it was.

well, first off, a few things to Rob:

I think you might have taken my post today a little personally, and although I do understand why you may have, I want you to know this was in know way directed towards you, or anyone else for that matter. If anything it was directed at everyone as a whole. I really didnt have one person in mind when typing it. I'm sorry if you took it personally, but if you did you need to think about why.

So that aside, I'd be interested to know which part you don't agree with?

I know I worded it a little harshly, but I didnt say making the lifestyle change was easy or the same for everyone. We all have ups and downs. What I'm saying is that "life doesnt get in the way". Only you (or whomever) is responsible for what goes in your mouth. Only you are responsible for your actions of lack thereof. No matter how shitty life can get, it doesnt make you gain weight. You do. Pass or fail, you did the work good or bad.

I'm not unsympathetic to life's shitty situations, I've had them too, but in end the end, when it comes to our own weight, well, life didn't do that, we did. Blaming it on anything else is just irresponsible and not fair to the only one who matters, yourself.

That's all I was trying to say. Once again, I am sorry you took it personally and I meant no offense to you personally.

Hey Brian,

I have to agree with what you have put in your post. Did it come off harsh maybe a little but its true. Every time I hear people say "I don't have time" or "I'm too stressed" I think BS. You have to make time and exercise is proven to help with stress. It's amazing that I have time to watch a hour or two of tv but don't have time to work out. I try not to waist too much time thinking about my missteps cause they are in the past and it really does no good. I have used ever excuse in the book in my past and they are just that "excuses"... Anyway keep the refreshing blogs rolling...

I agree with Brian here.

It's hard for everyone. Anyone who thinks it's harder for them than it is for anyone else is kidding themselves, IMO.

The fact of the matter is that when you leave openings for yourselves to fail, you will. When you see life situations as reasons to give up and eat shitty, you will use them in that way. But the person who says "No. Nothing is going to get in my way" still has to deal with shitty life things, but doesn't use them as an excuse to give in.

Sure, we're all different. But the bottom line is, we all have within us the capacity to succeed if we really had to.

Put it this way. If someone had a gun to your head the whole time, you wouldn't fuck up. I guess the difference is that some people mentally put a gun to their own heads. Other people don't. And THAT's the difference.

Sorry I didn't reply quicker - I'm actually still in Missouri for the funeral on Tuesday.

I can't do a huge blog right now because I've got 3 kids over my shoulder, but my reasoning is because I have a hard time lumping "everyone" into a group.

I didn't take it personal - at least not in a negative "stop talking about me" way. But, yeah- the shoe DOES fit, and in my case, it fits me pretty well. I have no problem admitting that I could have done better and that I should have and that I have no one to complain to about it but myself. I can deal with that. One thing my old man ALWAYS told me is that "if you've got it coming, take it like a man".

So yeah, your blog WAS referring to me - even if you didn't mean it directly. But it fits me, and I'll be the first one to admit.

But, there's a lot more to the story. Some people can't pull it off. Some people have mental or physical issues that prevent them. Not all of us have the golden platter of ability, or frankly - discipline. Is it a problem? Sure. But to say that EVERYONE should be able to do something.. anything, that's a step I'd be careful to take.

Then again, if you're reading a weight loss blog and you have an interest in losing weight, you read the blogs of the people who have been there, and done that. And you, my friend, are one of those guys.

It doesn't matter if "Everyone" can do it. It only matters if YOU can do it. And if you spend your time thinking that hey, maybe you can't, maybe you don't have what it takes, then you won't.
