Weight Averages and other questions

I notice a lot of you guys are talking about your average weights. How do you get that? I weight myself every morning before I eat anything. In the past week my weight has pretty much gone like this:

296.5
296
295.5
295.5
294
293
292.5

What do I need to do to get my average weight? Should I even worry about it since this was my first week of being "healthy"?

Also, what do you guys do for food when you havent planned well? Like today, I didnt get a chance to eat lunch because I had an 11am dentist appointment and Im not allowed to eat anything until 2pm which is now. I have some mandarin oranges in a can.

All I've eaten today is a yogurt and I dont know if a jar of mandarin oranges is going to give me enough energy to do my lifting routine this afternoon.

Also,Honestly, I thought I would have lost more than 4 pounds in the first week. I mean, I know thats on par with whats healthy to lose, but I've been eating so well. I've done about a total of 5 hours on the bike at work, I've ridden 12 miles on a real bike. I've lifted weights to muscle failure 4 times. I think i deserve 6 pounds. Ha.

FYI not eating enough can be counter productive in a big way. There are tones of calculators out there that will tell you about how much you should be eating. I would guess you would need to be in the 2500 a day range, probably more. Without the correct input you wont get the output. Your bodies metabolism will slow and start to consume muscle which you really don't want to do. Gets some food man!!! You just got to plan better around dentists appt etc. A 4 pound loss is really good by the way. I am sure some of the other gurus around here will have more solid advise for you.

ohh yeah and the average is just that.. most people do a 5 day. Add up your last five days and divide by 5. 295.5 + 295.5 + 294 + 293.5 + 292.5 = 1471 / 5 = 294.2 (5 day average)

My answer to bad meal planning is protein usually. If I hit the drive through, I try to stick to a lower carb option (even if it's just removing part of the bun). I keep oatmeal packs in my drawer at work. I don't love oatmeal, so I'm not tempted by it. Almonds are also good. What else? I keep lean cuisines in our freezer at work. Salads are always good for me (as long as there is chicken on it). Whole wheat english muffin toasted with peanut butter. Ok, I could obviously go on and on.

4 lbs is very respectable. I know you don't want to hear this, but don't get hung up on losing weight. Change your lifestyle and enjoy the side effect of weight loss.

First of all, 4 lbs in a week is a ton, more than you should have even expected. (after all, you've already lost like 16 right?)

I use that weight loss spreadsheet jay linked to- it's great.

Nuts. I keep a big can of mixed nuts around for emergencies. Also a few canned protein drinks (from trader joes) in the fridge. You really need to come up with a plan and plan ahead with food. Also, scout around for local places that have some healthy options.

All the best info has already been said. Don't starve yourself, it'll bite you in the ass the other way. Also, as already said, 4 pounds is a LOT. To be realistic, 1.5-2 pounds a week should be your healthy goal. 4 is a blessing - now don't get TOO greedy :P

I lost 16 just by cutting down on Bubba Burgers and Beer :). Thats kinda why I expected once I started exercising every day and REALLY watching what I'm eating that it would fall off even faster. On some bicycle trips I've been on in the past i've lost at much as 20 pounds in two weeks. Not that I'm saying that's healthy....

I'm doing my best to plan ahead. I have a fridge under my cube now full of hummus, nuts, salad, yogurts, green tea, and even some chicken that I can throw in salads, or make into a wrap with the low fat tortillas I also have in there.

My problem the other day was that I didnt plan well enough for the day so I starved.

I'm feeling pretty good about things right now.
